Hospitality carries the room
American Bar arrives with a reputation larger than almost any room could hold. On our visit, the physical setting did not fully meet that expectation. The decor felt dated, and the history of the place did not automatically make the room feel timeless.
Live music changed the mood. It brought warmth and movement to a setting that otherwise risked feeling static. More important was the hospitality. Everyone we met was kind, efficient, and genuinely welcoming. The service did what the decor could not: it made us want to stay.
Scotch was the better direction
The 135 Year Celebration made Scotch approachable for someone who enjoys the spirit without always loving it. It found a balance between character and accessibility, making it the more memorable drink from our visit.
The espresso martini was good, but its coffee flavor lacked the force we wanted. It did not undermine the evening, though it also did not match the strength of the welcome around it.
Menus change, so ask the team for the current Scotch based house cocktail rather than relying on the name from our visit. The useful lesson is the direction of the order.
Stay for the welcome
American Bar is best approached as an institution with real human warmth. Go when live music, attentive service, and the pleasure of being at The Savoy are central to the plan. Those qualities made the experience feel generous even when the room and drinks were less convincing.
Choose another bar if contemporary design or exacting cocktail craft must lead the night. At American Bar, hospitality is the reason to linger.
