Polished, but less distinctive than expected
Claridge’s Bar arrives with one of Mayfair’s most recognizable names. On our visit, the room had an almost retro mood, with deep red leather, a compact curved bar, and warm metallic finishes. It was polished, but the setting never developed the personality its pedigree led us to expect.
That gap matters in a hotel bar with this much history. The name creates an expectation that the room will feel singular. Instead, the atmosphere was pleasant but less memorable than the address suggests.
The temperature mattered
The espresso martini had decent coffee flavor and was good in outline, but it needed to arrive colder. Temperature is not a minor detail in this drink. Without enough chill, the coffee loses some of its snap and the whole order feels softer.
The Claridge Martini, made with the hotel’s gin, was also short on flavor. Neither drink was poor, but neither gave us the strong point of view we expected from the setting.
Go when Claridge’s is part of the plan
Claridge’s Bar still makes sense when the hotel itself is part of the occasion. It is a polished place to meet for a drink in Mayfair, especially when the address carries meaning for the evening. If the bar needs to supply the night’s most memorable room or strongest cocktails, choose another stop.
