Grand in intent, tired in effect
The Rivoli Bar arrives with an extraordinary advantage: it is inside The Ritz. That address sets an expectation of ceremony, glamour, and a room that can make a drink feel like an event. On our June visit, the reality lagged behind the promise. The furniture and décor were arranged for drama, but age had dulled the effect. Instead of reading as richly historic, the room felt tired.
That distinction matters in a grand hotel bar. History should give the room character; it should not become an excuse for a space that needs attention. Rivoli asked to be read as timeless, but the atmosphere never quite cleared that threshold for us.
Good drinks, not destination drinks
We ordered the Iron Lady and an espresso martini. Both were good, but neither changed the larger verdict. Champagne gave the Iron Lady lift, making it lively and refreshing; it was the more distinctive order. The espresso martini had a solid coffee base, but not the intensity we wanted.
When the Ritz is the point
Rivoli still makes sense for a particular kind of night: one where having a drink at The Ritz is itself part of the plan. Treat it as a dressy Piccadilly stop rather than the anchor for an evening built around London’s most accomplished cocktail rooms. The address can be reason enough to go, but it should be the reason.
Is this your night?
- Go if
- The Ritz address is part of the occasion and you want a polished drink before dinner in Piccadilly.
- Choose another bar if
- You are building the evening around London's most distinctive room or strongest cocktail program.
